While Greek mythology brought us the Titans, it was the Germans who applied the Titan qualities to their cars and cameras. Like any good battle, the Japanese also made their presence known with their own version of Samurai. Fast lenses are like fast cars, and when considering both, they share the same kinds of adjectives like ‘exotic, alluring, superlative, amazing, glamorous, extraordinary, unique and unusual’. Both fast cars and fast lenses have an appeal for their ability to give its operator more speed, control and power. To photographers wanting to express their vision through shallow depth of field, the ultra fast lens is a valuable tool, as it enables you to narrow the vision to the exact precise focus position within a frame. But there is much more than subject isolation to think about when analyzing a fast lens. Different lenses exhibit different and unique characters in the way they draw both the focused and defocused areas, and there is no better way to explore this area than by comparing the world’s top Titans.
There are endless amounts of photography books available these days, and an endless line of photographers behind them. Amongst those are some of the elite photographers, and once in a while they create a body of work that leaves you absolutely speechless. One of those photographers (at least for me) is Alex Webb.
I'm going backwards in time because my blog wasn't running at the time I made this video, but in case you haven't seen it, here's my unboxing of the Leica M (typ 240).
While in LA I was interviewed by Damon Webster of PhotoInduced, as he was wondering what was in my bag. I told him I had a lot of gear and he insisted on knowing about (almost) everything I had.....so I told him. The rest is history.
.....In just a short amount of years Craig has transformed himself from a professional comedy writer and actor (that's right!) to a globally respected documentary photographer, who has earned himself the endorsement of photography icon Elliott Erwitt of Magnum Photos. Mr. Erwitt wrote the foreword for Semetko's book, "Unposed," and writes of Craig, "In my book he is the essential photographer. That is, the one who sees what others could not have seen."
The latest camera in Leica’s M line of digital rangefinders was a big surprise to many upon it's announcement. Looking at it's feature-set it's clear that Leica has taken a few new steps to compete against cameras in the mainstream market, including M4/3, NEX, Nikon 1 and even SLR’s.
Well I've been avoiding blogging for some time now. I keep getting requests to write articles because I used to frequent some forums, but the truth is I'm not a professional writer and don't want to pretend to be. I don't intend on being a product reviewer, nor a blogger. There is a great list of people out there already doing a wonderful job of that.
What I do intend to do is write about topics that relate to my work in photography and the photography coaching I do with my students. Therefor everything I post 'should' have an educational background and motivation. It is my goal to engage with my followers and supporters with informative, educational, motivational and sometimes entertaining posts. I'll start off by going back and posting some of the work and interviews about me over the last few years. By the time you're done with them, I'll have new topics to talk about.
Looking forward to this challenge ahead and please feel free to leave comments and feedback below each post.
